How trend lifecycles work (and when to jump in)

Trends aren't random. Nearly all of them follow the same curve: a slow start among niche insiders, a steep rise as the algorithm catches on, a peak of saturation, and a decline into cringe.

The four phases

  1. Emerging — a format or sound appears in one niche community. Highest risk, highest reward.
  2. Rising — velocity kicks in; views on the format grow week over week. This is the entry window. You're early enough for outsized reach and late enough that the format is proven.
  3. Peaking — everyone's on it. You can still win here, but only with a genuinely fresh angle on the format.
  4. Declining — engagement drops, comments turn ironic. Skip, or subvert it as a joke.

Practical rules

  • A trend you first saw on your For You page is usually already peaking — the algorithm shows trends late.
  • Adapting a trend to your niche beats copying it. The trend supplies the format; your niche supplies the surprise.
  • Track a handful of niche-adjacent creators smaller than you: their experiments are tomorrow's rising trends.
